How to Get Free Legal Advice
Posted on August 25th, 2009 by CarmeliaGetting legal advice and assistance that you can trust can be tough, even tougher when you don’t have enough funds to get them. Fortunately, there are avenues you can try to get free legal advice from. Read on for more.
Non-Profit Organization
There are non-profit organizations out there that specialize in providing free legal advice to people who need them. Some non-profit organizations specialize on certain marginalized sectors, such as women and children. Look up the non-profit organizations in your locale and get in touch with those who you think can help.
You can also try looking for lawyers who have worked with the non-profit organization and find out if he or she would be willing to offer pro bono services. You can contact them by contacting the United Way to ask help in looking for suggestions on lawyers who work with charities.
Legal Aid Society
Look for the local chapter of the Legal Aid Society in your area or in the metro area where you live in. You can do this by looking them up in the Yellow Pages or by using Google. The Legal Aid Society is supported by corporate donations, private donations and interest from client trust accounts of local lawyers to help fund pro bono or low-cost legal advice for those who are qualified.
The American Bar Association
The American Bar Association is a voluntary bar association of lawyers and law students found all over the USA. They have state listings of agencies that will in turn help you where to go for pro bono or free legal assistance.
Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps
If you’re a military personnel, go to your local JAG office. The JAG Corps are the legal branch of the US Armed Forces and legal services will be extended to you and your family regarding a variety of cases.
The Yellow Pages
Look up the Lawyer’s Referral Service in the directory to find names of lawyers who have been listed to do pro bono or tax-exempt law services.
Law Schools
Some law schools set up help desks or clinics to give legal advice for free for those who need them. Law students are then tasked to answer your questions. If you need a few basic questions answered, this is the place to go. Keep in mind that these are students so they are not yet licensed attorneys. The best thing you can ask for is sound advice only. Call the law schools in your area if they have scheduled clinics in their schools scheduled in the future.
Local Attorney’s Office
It is the ethical duty of each attorney to accept a certain amount of pro bono work at least yearly. Call up your local attorney’s office and ask if he or she is open to do pro bono work or at least give legal advice regarding your case.
