How to Fix an iPod
Posted by monsterguideHow to Fix an iPod
The iPod ranks high as one of the most important pieces of personal technology for the new millennium. Millions of people rely on the iPod not only for portable music, but also for storing critical data and as a backup device. Yet like any piece of technology, an iPod can malfunction from time to time, and you sometimes need to perform an end-user repair job to make it work again. If you don’t want to spend extra time and effort to take your iPod to the nearest Apple service center, here are some ways to help you fix your iPod.
Diagnose the Problem
Whether it’s an iPod Classic, iPod Mini, iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, or iTouch, Apple made iPods as reliable as possible. Sometimes, though, iPods can malfunction, or cease to work altogether. Before you succumb to the urge of disassembling your iPod to tinker with the delicate circuitry, you first need to diagnose the problem. Here are three common causes of iPod malfunctions:
- Temporary problem. From time to time, an iPod will suffer from a few reliability problems. There are a few glitches here and there during syncing and restoring that can be resolved by downloading the latest version of iTunes and software version for your iPod.
- Interrupted sync. If you disconnect the iPod from the USB or FireWire port before it finishes syncing, you run the risk of making the internal software unstable, causing hangups.
- Physical damage. Physical shock, moisture damage, and high static voltage can ruin iPods beyond repair.
Use the Restore Function
One way that you could fix your iPod is to use the “Restore” function in iTunes. The “Restore” function reconfigures your iPod back to its original factory settings using the iPod software already installed or updated with the program. To run the “Restore” function, follow these tips:
- Make sure you’re connected to the Internet.
- Download the latest version of iTunes. Now would also be a good time to download the latest updates and versions for your other Apple software packages.
- Connect the iPod to the computer. Your iPod’s icon should appear on the Source panel.
- Click your iPod’s icon on the Source Panel and click “Summary.”
- Click on the “Restore” button and choose the restore function best suited for your iPod. For best results, click on the “Restore and Update” option.
- Leave the iPod connected to the computer until the restore process is completed, and sync your iPod again.
Reformat, Then Restore
Sometimes you’ll need to reformat the iPod first to clear up the entire memory storage space before you run the “Restore” function. To accomplish this task, follow these steps:
- Make sure you’re connected to the Internet.
- Download the latest version of iTunes and the latest software update for your iPod.
- Run iTunes, and disable the functionality where iTunes automatically loads up when you hook up the iPod to your computer.
- Connect the iPod through the USB port.
- Format the iPod with a disk formatting tool. Make sure to use a full format instead of quick-formatting the iPod.
- Run iTunes after the disk formatting task is complete, and follow the steps to restore your iPod.
Remember that if these remedies do not work, you should take your iPod to an accredited service and repair center. With these tips to help you fix your iPod, you can have more time enjoying music than spending the better part of your waking hours listening to silence.

I have the same problem with my 20 gig ipod. It keeps saying to plug it into the wall charger but nothing ever happens. Itunes won’t recognize it. ONce in a while my computer will detect it(rarely) but I can’t do anything with it. I have hard drive click but someone told me if the main board is damaged, it could have ruined the hard drive as well. I don’t know what to do.

It’s worth adding that if your iPod refuses to go into Disk Mode and you hear a noticeable clicking sound the problem might just be corrosion on the HDD cable and will need cleaned periodically.
