How to Etch Glass
Posted on October 5th, 2009 by CarmeliaEtching glass is a great way to personalize items like glasses, vases, glass awards and other similar objects. Personalized glass can be made into giveaways, souvenirs, or a fun project for all. Here’s how you can etch glass yourself.
Tools
- Etching acids cream
- Glass object or mirror
- Latex gloves
- Glass cleaners
- Soft, clean and lint-free cloth
- Pencils
- X-Acto knife
- Plastic knife
- Painter’s tape
Procedure
- Make sure that the glass you’re etching on is clean. You can do this by simply wiping a soft, clean and lint-free cloth on the glass or by using glass cleaner.
- Cover the area where you want the etching to go on with transparent contact paper. Get rid of bubbles by flattening out the contact paper with the handle of the X-Acto knife.
- If you’re etching transparent glass, like a champagne glass, get the design printed out on a two-sided adhesive that you can stick on the inside part of the glass. If you’re etching on something like a mirror, outline the design directly on the contact paper using a stencil.
- Cut out the design using the X-Acto knife. This is an important part of the etching process, so do this very carefully. Peel away the parts that you want the etching to appear.
- Check the remaining contact paper on the glass. Flatten out any remaining bubbles that appear in the edges using the handle of your X-Acto knife.
- Put painter’s tape on all the outer edges of the contact paper to secure it further.
- Put your protective latex gloves on. (For more information regarding latex gloves, read The Guide To Latex Gloves)
- Use a plastic knife to spread on the etching acids cream all over the exposed part of the contact paper. Think of it as like putting frosting over a cupcake.
- Let the cream sit for around five to ten minutes for it to do its work.
- Rinse the cream off the glass under running water until it’s been completely removed.
- Peel off the painter’s tape and the remaining contact paper, rinsing the glass under running water again.
- Let dry. You know have yourself an etched glass.
