How to Enjoy the Summer on a Budget
Posted on July 29th, 2009 by RJYou don’t have to have loads of cash to enjoy the summer season. With early planning and coordination, you can have fun in the sun without burning your life savings. Here are some summer activities you may want to try that definitely won’t break the bank:
Stay with relatives and friends.
Instead of booking an expensive hotel room on an out of town trip or abroad, why not stay at a relative or friend’s house? Give your loved one a phone call a month before crashing into their place so that they can prepare your room early.
Informing them early will also give them enough time to take a leave from work and tour you around the city. Not only will you save some cash on hotel accommodation and food, but you will also have valuable time to catch up with people close to you.
Organize potluck parties.
Eating out often can empty your wallet instantly so instead of going to restaurants and bars, organize potluck parties with your family members and friends. In a potluck party, everyone is expected to bring their own share of food and drinks to a designated house.
You can take turns in bringing food every week and even create themed parties to spice things up. For instance, a certain group can bring Mexican food. The succeeding week, another group can bring in Chinese delicacies.
No need to send invitations and set up decorations. You can then incorporate games and other activities in the party like setting up a karaoke machine or your favorite board games.
Travel in groups.
You can save a significant amount of your travel budget if you go out in a group. Approach any of your friends and neighbors and ask them if they’d like to join you on one of your trips. You can usually get a group rate if you go together.
Save on gas expenses and entrance fees. You can also take turns in spending for your meals. As an added bonus, you can also take turns in taking photos of each other.
Go to museums and parks.
Instead of spending for movie tickets, you can try visiting museums near your area. Most public and Smithsonian museums offer free admission although you may have to spend for food. To solve this, you can bring your own lunch and eat your meal inside the car or a nearby park.
You can also visit the numerous parks scattered all over the country. Enjoy biking, hiking, and flying your own kite, among others.
