How to Dye Your Roots
Posted on October 14th, 2009 by ElaineYou’ve decided to dye your hair from blond to brunette, and you feel good. After a few weeks, though, your blond hair grows back and the roots appear lighter than the rest of your locks. Don’t worry, because you can easily dye your roots so they will match your hairstyle. Here’s how to perform this beauty maintenance trick.
What You’ll Need:
- Hair dye
- Old t-shirt
- Shampoo
- Hair clips
- Hair conditioner
- Comb
- Petroleum jelly
- Towel
- Timer
- Rubber gloves
Procedure:
- Get your materials ready, including your hair dye. You should use the same color that you originally used, so the roots will blend in well with your hair. If available, purchase a root-dyeing kit from the same brand and color as you used. If not, just get the one you originally bought.
- Wash your hair thoroughly, using a shampoo that’s made for colored hair and a deep-conditioning hair conditioner. Rinse then towel dry thoroughly.
- Slip into an old t-shirt that you don’t mind getting dirtied. Wear the rubber gloves as well. Spread an old towel over the countertops, to catch any dye, so it won’t stain the countertops.
- Part your hair into four sections, first at the center, then from one ear to another. Clip back these sections.
- Apply petroleum jelly around your hairline, so your skin won’t be stained by the hair dye solution. (For more uses of petroleum jelly, read 18 of petroleum jelly’s wondrous uses)
- Prepare the hair dye according to the instructions given.
- Set the timer as soon as you start applying the dye. Keep the dye on your hair five minutes shorter than the suggested treatment indicated on the box.
- Trace and go along the parts in the section, squeezing the hair dye’s bottle gently. Release the hair clip, then keep the bottle’s tip close to your scalp. Stripe lines over the entire area, thinly-spacing them. Once done with this section, re-clip it. Move to another section and do the same.
- To brighten your hair color and make an even seam between the ends and the newly-grown hair, apply the leftover dye all over your hair.
- Rinse away the solution as directed.

Some Tips:
- Be careful not to put hair dye in your eyes.
- Deep conditioning your hair a day before you touch up the roots is a great idea, to replenish lost moisture.
- Don’t go swimming for a few days after dyeing your roots, so the color will not be altered.
Dyeing your hair roots is easy, as long as you have the right hair color. Follow these easy steps and you’ll get this done in no time. If you enjoy reading this article, you’ll surely be interested in learning how to get rid of dyed hair.
