Definition on who or what a scenester is varies, but that’s exactly the point. Scenesters are people (mostly teenagers) who identify with a subculture or constantly changes their personal style to fit in better with a chosen peer group. The scenester’s fashion getup can be based around specific films, music and art. They can be seen as the chameleons of subcultures, without any agenda or statement other than fitting in. Here’s how to dress like one.

Hair

One thing that stands out for many scenesters is their hair. Scenesters pride themselves for their unusual haircuts. The most typical hairstyle for them is aggressively layered hair with loud, often neon-colored streaks. Scenesters also like to have their hair streaked with stripes, alternating between black and blonde.

For guys, they like their hair up in jagged peaks stiff with gel. Like girls, they like to completely dye their hair in loud neon colors, or streaking pitch-dark hair with brighter hues.

Face

Scene queens is the term used for attractive female scenester teenagers, and most of them prefer wearing sparkly makeup. They also like using heavy neon-colored eyeshadow, dark eyeliner and bubblegum pink lipstick. They tend to wear their makeup a bit on the heavy side, and they sometimes sport nose rings.

Scenester guys like to keep a clean-shaven face with bangs (also known as the scenester swoop) falling over their eyes. Their eyes are also typically heavily lined with black eyeliner. They may have multiple piercings all over, depending on what subculture they like to heavily reference from.

Scenesters are also typically more cheerful than their emo counterparts, so don’t be afraid to smile!

Clothes

A common theme among scenesters are wearing dark clothing with loud punches of neon color, or just neon clothes, period. Most scenester girls would like to be as sexily clothed as possible, or wear body-hugging clothing such as baby tees and hot shorts. Sometimes when it’s warm enough, they would simply wear bikini tops along with their brightly-colored stretch shorts.

Scenester guys detest the slouchy and baggy clothes of their hiphop-loving peers. Instead, they like to be as dressy enough to give scenester girls a run for their money. Scenester guys like to pair dark clothing with cutesy designs, typically characters from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas and anything similar. They also like wearing ironic shirts that are no longer ironic, since everyone has started wearing them around the same time they did. The signature scenester look are tight dark pants, also favored by most hipsters.

Accessories

Scenester girls like to accessorize using bright and usually cheap jewelry. They like pendants in the shape of giant diamonds juxtaposed with batskull pendants. They also like wearing tons of brightly-colored neon bracelets. Ring pops are also a favorite, as well as random body paint all over their bodies. Their shoes are either Vans flats or mismatched high heels in neon colors.

Scenester boys like wearing attention-grabbing belts, usually loud in color with big buckles. Studded and spiked belts are favorites. They also like wearing many rubber or leather bracelets. Rings and necklace pendants are made from metal and are typically in the form of a skull, bats and other supposedly arcane symbols. Shoes range from diry black Converse, industrial spiked boots or draven slip-ons. Some scenester boys also like to have multiple tattoos on their bodies, typically sleeve tattoos. They also sport many piercings in all the usual places.

Remember, scenesters have a wide range of subcultures or countercultures to choose from, so don’t be afraid to pick out which you like best. Mix, match and enjoy!
