Some guys deride being called “emo,” and would rather call themselves “hardcore punk” or “post hardcore.”  Love it or hate it, though, emo has as much of an influence in fashion as it does with music.  Many guys now consider emo fashion to be the hip new trend, and have adopted the fashion sense of the emo genre into their own styles of clothing.  If you want to have that emo look, here are some ways to help you get your inner emotionally scarred soul out to the way you dress.

Hair and Eyewear

Like many things about fashion, the emo dress sense begins with the head and the face.  Here are some tips to help you get that unmistakably emo look the moment someone looks at you:

  • Hair swept to the side. The trick to emo hair is to make it look unkempt and unwashed.  Greasy hair waxes and hair gels usually get the job done.  If you have long hair, sweep the bangs to one side to cover one of your eyes, and hold it down with hair wax.
  • Thick-rimmed glasses. Black-rimmed glasses also help add to the emo look.  The lenses themselves don’t need to have prescription grades, as long as they give you that geeky, smart look.
  • Makeup. If you don’t like wearing glasses, you could add a bit of eyeshadow or eyeliner to give you a Goth-punk look that’s unmistakably emo.

Clothes

Clothes make the emo man.  You probably already have a good idea of how emo guys look, but just in case you want to make yourself look even more emo, here are some ideas:

  • Tight jeans. The tighter your jeans are, the better.  Boot-cut, skin-tight jeans that are a little too short for you are perfect for daily emo wear.  Make sure that they hang a few inches above your ankles, and wear long socks.
  • Worn Chucks. The Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars may be associated with punk or grunge, but they become very emo if they are torn, worn, or painted with paint-splattered designs.
  • Tight shirts. Rock and heavy metal fans typically wear their favorite band’s promotional shirt at all times, and emo is no exception.  Another alternative to My Chemical Romance, Saosin, and Dashboard Confessional shirts is to wear shirts with assymetrical designs.  Make sure that your shirt is at least one size smaller than your usual shirt size; the tighter and smaller it is, the better.

Accessories

Emo fashion, like other fashion trends, is all about accessories.  The right accessories can add a lot to your emo points.  Here are some very emo stuff you can add to your overall look:

  • Bags. Satchels, coffin-shaped bags, and really worn backpacks and sling bags are just of the few things that make emo hardcore.  If you consider yourself “hardcore punk” more than emo, a few strips of duct tape here and there can affirm your love for punk more than your hidden appreciation for all things emo.
  • Wrist bands and belts. The key to belts and wrist bands is that they should have a lot of studs and rivets, and should look newer than the clothes you wear.
  • Headsets. Instead of attaching earphones to your iPod or MP3 player, use noise-cancelling headsets instead.  Big headsets will further enhance your emo look, as long as you play your favorite emo tracks and sing out loud every now and then.

People will argue over what really is emo for the next few years, but most agree that the emo look is here to stay for quite a while.  With these tips to help you dress emo, sorrow and melancholy pretty much becomes a hot new fashion trend you can ride on.
