How to Do a Heelflip
Posted on March 11th, 2009 by ElaineSkateboarding is boring if you don’t know how to do any tricks, and one common example many enthusiastic skateboarders master is the heelflip. It might seem simple, but the truth is it’s more difficult compared to a kickflip, since using the heel to spin the board is harder, rather than using the toes. If you really want to do this trick though, here’s how.
What You’ll Need:
- Skateboard
- Elbow Pads
- Knee Pads
- Helmet
- Skateboarding shoes
Procedure:
- Before you can do a heelflip, you should know how to do an ollie. Master this skateboarding technique first. Once you’ve mastered the ollie, proceed to the next steps.
- Remember how you set up your feet when you were doing the ollie, and get into the same position. This time, move your front foot a bit to the toe part of your board, so the ball of your foot is at least 3/4 down towards the edge, so your toes are hanging over a little.
- Adjust your back foot, so the ball is found in the tail’s middle part. You’ll feel the right spot.
- Crouch down, and then spring upwards, snapping your tail as you normally do for an ollie. As you go up, put some pressure on the ball of your front foot, Before going up to your maximum ollie height, kick your front foot outwards, and roll your ankle, trying to spin the board with your heel.
- Keep your front foot outwards, so the board will spin under you, as you stay above it. Keep an eye on the grip tape as it comes round. Keep your back foot away too, so the board won’t get caught in it.
- After the board is over 3/4 the rotation, bring your front foot back, and catch the board.
- Land the trick, uncompressing your legs as you do so. It’s ideal to land on the bolts, for a smoother, and safer landing. Doing so also prevents your board from snapping.
A Few Tips
- Landing a heelflip perfectly requires plenty of practice. Keep trying if you don’t get it right the first time.
- Try to land with both your feet on the board.
- Wear safety gear as you do this trick.
Perfecting a heelflip is great. Just follow these tips and you’ll master this skateboarding technique, to the envy of your fellow skateboarders.
