How to Dismantle a Laptop
Posted on September 21st, 2009 by MarckDismantling a laptop may seem to be a bad idea at first, but many repair jobs and maintenance tasks can be performed easier if you take the time to disassemble your notebook computer. Some cleaning, upgrading, and repairing tasks can only be accomplished when the computer is dismantled. Here are the tools and steps you need to dismantle a laptop computer.
Warranty and Guarantee Checks
Before disassembling your laptop, you need to make sure that you’re not violating existing warranty and guarantee rules. Some laptop manufacturers may state that disassembling a laptop on your own may void warranty provisions that come with your device. While it’s best to have qualified service personnel repair or disassemble your laptop for you, you need to check your device manuals and certificates first before dismantling a laptop computer.
Tools
To disassemble a laptop computer, you need the following tools:
- Screwdriver set (you may need a modular screwdriver with assorted bits and heads, depending on the configuration of your computer)
- Anti-static bags or surfaces
- Safety glasses
Steps
Here are the steps you need to dismantle your laptop:
- Place the laptop on an anti-static surface. Static electricity can permanently damage your computer. Keep the computer away from things that produce static, like Styrofoam packaging and natural fabrics.
- Detach the battery from the computer, along with other devices that may be attached to ports.
- Turn the computer over to expose the screw slots.
- Carefully remove the screws from the screw slots, and set them aside. Make sure that you don’t lose the screws.
- Remove the bottom part of the casing. You should now see the inner workings and components of your computer.
- Perform the necessary repair, maintenance, and cleaning tasks you need to accomplish. Make sure that you do not nick, chip, or damage soldered contact points, and that you secure the cables properly to the appropriate slots and ports.
- Once you have finished the maintenance or repair tasks, position the back cover of the laptop and replace the screws securely onto the frame of the machine.
- Test the computer to see if all the parts are working.
Disassembling a computer may seem intimidating at first, but once you get to the essentials of dismantling a laptop you can perform maintenance tasks quicker, better, and safer. With these steps, you can take on laptop repair tasks on your own with only a few tools and safe computer repair practices.
