How to Delete Address Bar History
Posted on August 24th, 2009 by MarckNot all people have their own Internet connection. Some people have to rely on public computer terminals and networks, which have less robust security compared to personal connections. One step you can do to help improve privacy and security is to delete the contents of the browser’s address bar.
Why Delete Your Address Bar History?
To make access faster and more convenient, most Internet browsers store or cache addresses you enter into the address bar. Depending on the settings of the browser, the address bar may reflect the addresses or search queries typed into the bar, or may also direct to cached pages previously accessed. While deleting search and address history may not be necessary in personal connections, this is a good practice when you’re using a public connection.
Clearing Browsing History
Here are some ways to delete your browsing history from four common browsers used in public connections:
Internet Explorer
- Click on the “Tools” menu on the Menu bar.
- Click “Internet Options” to open the dialog box.
- You will see a “History” setting on the “General” tab. To clear your browsing history, click the “Clear History” button.
- You may also want to set how long the browser keeps pages in the History cache.
- Click OK.
Mozilla Firefox
- Click on the “Tools” menu on the Menu bar.
- Click on the “Privacy” tab on the dialog box.
- You’ll be given three options where you can set Firefox to always remember your browsing history, never remember your browsing history, or you can set your own custom settings.
- Click the “Clear Your Recent History” option.
- Click “OK.”
Opera
- Click on the “Tools” menu on the Menu bar.
- Click “Preferences.”
- Go to the “Advanced” tab on the dialog box, and click “History.”
- Click the “Clear” button. You may also want to fiddle with the settings for how many pages Opera will keep cached.
- Click “OK.”
Google Chrome
- Click on the Wrench icon on the upper right-hand portion of the window.
- Click “Clear Browsing Data.”
- Check the “Clear Browsing History” option, as well as other options you may want to clear from your browser.
- Click “OK.”
A cleared address bar protects you from the possibility of someone accessing or recording your browsing habits. With these steps, you can delete your browsing history for safe and secure browsing. For more information regarding this article, read Online security best practice tips.
