How to Deep Condition Hair
Posted on June 2nd, 2009 by ElaineYour hair, just like the other parts of your body needs to be nourished so it will always look beautiful and healthy. The best way to “feed” your hair is to deep condition it, and is great if you want to heal and repair your damaged hair. Doing this is easy, with these steps.
What You’ll Need:
- High quality deep conditioner
- Plastic cap
- A heating unit (heating pad, micro heat wrap, hot water bottle or a blow dryer cap)
- Time
- Water
- Wide toothed comb
- Leave on conditioner
Procedure:
- Wash your hair first. Rinse it out properly, then squeeze out the excess water.
- While your hair is still damp, apply the deep conditioner generously. Work your way through using your fingers, making sure you apply all parts. Focus on the ends, too. If you think your hair is too thick, you can use a wide toothed comb to help you with this task.
- Secure the shower cap around your head, covering your hair fully. Afterwards, put the heating device on your head. Leave it there for 20 minutes or longer. This allows the hair cuticles to fully open, and the conditioner to permeate completely, feeding your hair.
- When the 20 minute wait is over, take off the cap, and let your hair cool for five minutes. This will cause your hair shaft to close again.
- Using warm water, rinse your hair, until about 80% of the conditioner is gone.
- Do the final rinse, using water with the coldest temperature you can withstand. This causes your hair shaft to seal and you get all the benefits from the treatment.
- Apply a leave-on conditioner, then let your hair air dry.
- The next day, don’t wash your hair. Allow the treatment to stay for at least 24 hours.
Some Tips
- Deep conditioning becomes more effective when done weekly. Find a day when your schedule isn’t very tight, and you have plenty of time.
- If you have salon-colored hair, consult your stylist and check if the deep conditioner you use works well with your hair color.
- Deep conditioning in the evening is a great idea.
Feeding your hair appropriately ensures that it stays nourished all the time. Make sure you deep condition it properly, so it’ll stay protected and beautiful.
