By learning how to copy and paste, you can take information from one place to another. You can copy and paste almost anything from your computer from text, files, pictures and web pages.

It is different from ‘cut and paste’ since in this process, the original source data does not get deleted or erased. Additionally, you can move files between various computer applications easily without having to resort to permanent storage.

Coping and Pasting into Email

For instance, to copy and paste a part of your document into an email, just follow these simple tips:

  1. First, select the text you want to copy and transfer. You can do this by putting your mouse cursor at the first character of your text. Hold it down using the left mouse button and drag the cursor to the last character you want to copy. You will notice that everything gets highlighted as your drag the cursor.
  2. When you have selected and highlighted your chosen text, right-click the selected area and choose Copy from the menu that shows up. Should you wish to use keyboard shortcuts, you can use CTRL-C.
  3. Lastly, right-click the part in your e-mail document where you would like to put the selected text. Click Paste from the menu or use CTRL-V for keyboard shortcuts.

Though it is easy to copy and paste information using your computer, please be reminded that there are certain existing laws to combat plagiarism. This term refers to the word for word copying of a sentence, phrase or paragraph without using quotation marks and without citing sources properly.

The Internet has made copy and pasting so tempting especially for students with set deadlines for their papers. It is recommended that you read about plagiarism before attempting to use any existing text, or quote the source accordingly before doing doing some copy and pasting.
