How to Copy a DVD
Posted on May 5th, 2009 by ElaineDoes your friend have a DVD movie you want to copy and keep for yourself? Maybe the DVD is too scratched already and you want to preserve it. It’s easy to copy a DVD as long as you have the right tools and you know the proper steps.
What You’ll Need:
- PC with DVD burner
- Internet connection
- DVD decrypting program
- DVD burning software
- Blank DVDs
Procedure:
- Check if the DVD you want to copy is Copyright Protected, and that no copyright laws are being violated. If it is, then see if you can find another DVD movie or game to copy.
- Buy some blank DVDs. Make sure you get a reliable brand, since not all brands of DVDs work on all types of DVD players.
- Close other programs that you’re using. These can slow down your PC, making downloading and burning time slower.
- Get a DVD decrypting or “ripping” program. This might not be easy because there are legal threats the prohibit software companies from distributing this kind of software. Browse the Internet and find one that can be downloaded without any additional costs. Make sure you’re protected from adware and spyware before doing this, though.
- Once the DVD ripping program has been downloaded, you can now decrypt or “rip” the DVD. Launch the ripping program, following the instructions given. Different types of program have different procedures. The program will then read the DVD, extract the required digital information, then encode it in a file format your PC can read.
- Insert the DVD you want to copy in your PC’s disk drive. When the program has finished ripping the DVD, remove it from the drive. The DVD file is not saved on your PC.
- If your PC has a DVD burning software, you can use it to burn the new DVD file. If not, download a DVD burning software. Some are found online that you can download without any costs.
- Run the DVD burning program, selecting the ripped DVD file you want to copy. See other options available, like creating a title menu. Once you’re done, press “Burn DVD” and insert a blank DVD in your disk drive. The length of the burning process depends on the contents of the DVD, and can take up to an hour to finish.
- Test your new DVD copy on your DVD player.
With these easy steps, you can quickly make copies of different DVD movies. Just remember to check that you’re not violating copyright laws, otherwise, you’ll beĀ guilty of piracy.
