How to Cook Turnips

Bake
- Wipe off the dirt off the turnip to clean.
- Trim the stems and roots by half an inch.
- Put in an oven-proof baking dish and cover with foil.
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 F and bake until the turnips are softened, usually in 30-45 minutes.
- Once baked, take out of the oven and let cool.
- You can use your fingers to remove the roots and skins. Be careful, they’re hot!
Roast
- Cut into quarters.
- Sprinkle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Other herbs are also acceptable.
- Roast for 30-45 minutes in 350 F.
- Let cook and enjoy.
Boil
- Do not peel the turnips. Simple clean using a paper towel
- Cut stems by half an inch.
- Add a potato the boiling water to minimize bitter taste.
- Submerge the turnips in water and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
- Take out of the water, cool and season as you like.
Saute
- If you’re working with small turnips, leave them as they are. Bigger turnips should be cut in half or in quarters.
- Peel the turnips.
- Use a frying pan with a lid. Heat a teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil and when heated, put in the turnips.
- Stir for a bit, and add a few tablespoons of water. Put the lid over the pan.
- Saute for five to 15 minutes. Check if they’re cooked by testing out their tenderness.
Steam
- Peel the turnips
- If you are using small turnips, leave them as they are. Cut larger turnips in half or quarters.
- Put them in the steamer and cook for 20 to 25 minutes.
- The turnips will be fully cooked when they are tender.
Roast
- Get a baking dish and put a teaspoon of vegetable oil.
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Peel the turnips and take half an inch off both ends.
- Keep smaller turnips whole, while cutting bigger ones into halves or quarters.
- Once the oven is hot enough put the turnips in the baking dish and let them bake for one to two hours.
- Keep turning the turnips every now and then.
- Turnips are cooked when they are a brown color outside.
- Serve as a side dish.
