How to Cook Turnips

Turnips are a healthy option and addition to any dish. They can be enjoyed raw or cooked in a number of ways. They’re also very versatile. Whet your appetite yet? Here’s the different ways to cook turnips.

Bake

  1. Wipe off the dirt off the turnip to clean.
  2. Trim the stems and roots by half an inch.
  3. Put in an oven-proof baking dish and cover with foil.
  4. Pre-heat the oven to 350 F and bake until the turnips are softened, usually in 30-45 minutes.
  5. Once baked, take out of the oven and let cool.
  6. You can use your fingers to remove the roots and skins. Be careful, they’re hot!

Roast

  1. Cut into quarters.
  2. Sprinkle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Other herbs are also acceptable.
  3. Roast for 30-45 minutes in 350 F.
  4. Let cook and enjoy.

Boil

  1. Do not peel the turnips. Simple clean using a paper towel
  2. Cut stems by half an inch.
  3. Add a potato the boiling water to minimize bitter taste.
  4. Submerge the turnips in water and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Take out of the water, cool and season as you like.

Saute

  1. If you’re working with small turnips, leave them as they are. Bigger turnips should be cut in half or in quarters.
  2. Peel the turnips.
  3. Use a frying pan with a lid. Heat a teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil and when heated, put in the turnips.
  4. Stir for a bit, and add a few tablespoons of water. Put the lid over the pan.
  5. Saute for five to 15 minutes. Check if they’re cooked by testing out their tenderness.

Steam

  1. Peel the turnips
  2. If you are using small turnips, leave them as they are. Cut larger turnips in half or quarters.
  3. Put them in the steamer and cook for 20 to 25 minutes.
  4. The turnips will be fully cooked when they are tender.

Roast

  1. Get a baking dish and put a teaspoon of vegetable oil.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  3. Peel the turnips and take half an inch off both ends.
  4. Keep smaller turnips whole, while cutting bigger ones into halves or quarters.
  5. Once the oven is hot enough put the turnips in the baking dish and let them bake for one to two hours.
  6. Keep turning the turnips every now and then.
  7. Turnips are cooked when they are a brown color outside.
  8. Serve as a side dish.
