MP3 is a popular standard for digital music.  Some people may still end up downloading tracks or tunes encoded in MIDI, but want them to be playable in portable MP3 players.  Here are some ways for you to convert MIDI files to MP3.

MIDI and MP3 Explained

File conversion is becoming increasingly popular among music enthusiasts because of the changing standards in digital music.  Thanks to portable digital music players and the popularity of the iPod, more and more people are looking to digital music as a very important part of life.

Before converting MIDI files to MP3, you have to know a bit about the file formats:

  • MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface.  MIDI is often used for sound generated and recorded from synthesizers, digital music instruments, and MIDI input devices in computers.  The range and content of MIDI is quite limited compared to other forms of digital music and sound files.
  • MP3 stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3.  It is a compressed, lossy audio format used to store and distribute many forms of digital music.  MP3 is the one of the most common ways to encode music files because it occupies very little disk space.  Depending on the bitrate it is encoded in, an MP3 file can sound like an uncompressed, lossless audio file.

Conversion Tools

There are many tools available for you to convert MIDI files to MP3:

  • Proprietary sound editing tools. Programs like CoolEdit and SoundForge can be used to create MIDI, and they can also be used to save MIDI projects or existing MIDI files to MP3.  The catch is that you have to pay for a licensed copy to use them.
  • Downloadable tools. Some sound editing tools may be downloaded for free, or a trial version may be available with limited functionalities.  Downloadable conversion tools typically do not allow you to edit the sound file, but they are only limited to file conversion.
Before converting any MIDI file into MP3, you should always make backup copies in case the conversion process is not completed.  With these tips, you can convert your MIDI files to MP3 to apply a single sound format standard to all of the music files in your computer.
