How to Contour Your Face
Posted on September 9th, 2009 by aileenWhile some people are gifted with a perfect face, most of us aren’t. We can contour our faces to create balance and hide flaws. Here are some tips you can follow to contour your face.
Benefits of Contouring Your Face:
- Contouring adds dimensions to your face.
- Contour your face to achieve a balanced look.
- It also hides flaws and other blemishes.
Things You’ll Need:
- Liquid or powder foundation
- Press powder
- Contour brush
- Contour color
- Blush
- Powder brush
- Eye shadow
Where to Start
Before starting, it’s important to know the shape of your face and find the places that you either need to accentuate or color down.
- Stand in front of a mirror with a light above your head.
- Look at your face and see where the light falls. Areas that have shadows are the places that you need to contour.
- You can also try sucking you cheeks in. The curves you create when you suck your cheeks are the areas where you need to put on your contour color.
- Decide whether you need to contour your nose or not. Also, determine if you want to have wider or narrower eyes.
Preparing your Base
Having an even skin tone is important when contouring your face.
- Use a liquid or powder foundation on your face.
- It’s recommended to use a color a few shades darker than your natural skin tone.
- Evenly apply the foundation on your face.
- Don’t forget to put foundation on your neck to create an even look.
Contouring
After you’re done with your base makeup, it’s time to create lines on your face.
Cheeks
Remember the hollowed areas when you sucked your cheeks in? These are the parts that need contouring.
- Dab your contour brush on your contour color.
- The contour color should be a few shades darker than your base make up.
- Apply contour color on the inside of the hollowed area.
- Brush upwards until you reach the level of your mid-ear.
- Your contour curve should have the same angle as your jaw line.
- Use a neutral shade of face powder or blush to blend the contour color.
Nose
Create an illusion of a slimmer nose by contouring it correctly.
- With a darker shade of foundation, make a line from the end of your eyebrow to the side of your nostril.
- Repeat the step on the other side of your nose.
- With a highlighter or a lighter shade of foundation, create a thin line on the bridge of your nose from the middle of your eyebrows down to the tip of your nose.
- Blend it with a neutral shade of face powder. Make sure not to lighten the lines you made, otherwise, you’d have to repeat the procedure again.
Eyes
Draw attention to your eyes through contouring.
- Use the lightest eyeshadow for your lash and crease.
- Apply a dark eyeshadow on the outer edges of your lids.
- Blend the edges to create a smoother look.
Blush and Highlight
Finish your contour with a pretty blush and highlight.
- To easily find the area where you need to put your blush on, make a big smile.
- Put blush on the apples of your cheeks.
- Apply it from the inside going upwards towards the temples.
- Apply your highlight color gently on your cheekbone. This is the area just below your eyes.
- Blend the contour lines by adding blush on the area between your blush line and contour line to create a finish look.
Contouring is an art of making something pretty even more prettier. Though not all of us have perfect faces, everyone has a pretty face. Highlight your best assets and play down those flaws.
