Not all people have perfect vision, which makes it quite difficult to accomplish many tasks. Most people with vision problems wear a pair of glasses to correct their eyesight, but it sometimes gets tricky to get the right kind of glasses that they’re comfortable with. If you need to get yourself a pair of glasses but you’re not sure what kind of lenses and frames you need to buy, here are some tips to help you out:

Types of Glasses

eyeglassesUnless you’re getting safety glasses or protective eyewear, an optometrist or ophthalmologist is the only person who can prescribe a pair of glasses to you. Glasses correct a patient’s vision by bending light to make vision clearer; if you have perfect vision to begin with, you may end up with significant vision damage because you wore glasses with a strong grade.

Here are some of the kinds of glasses that you may get from your doctor:

  • Reading glasses are non-prescription glasses used to correct mild vision problems that prevent a person from seeing nearby objects, but otherwise has no significant problems with vision from the mid-range or from a distance.
  • Prescription glasses are graded lenses used for people with medium to severe myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
  • Bifocals are lenses with two different grades to the same lens. Bifocals usually have a wide field to correct a dominant vision problem (usually nearsightedness). A smaller, more powerful lens is embedded in the lens (or occupies half the total area of the lens) for more precise vision when needed.

Frames

Frames should not only hold the lenses of your glasses in place, but they should also look good on you. Many people feel uncomfortable or self-conscious wearing glasses, and the right frames can boost their self-confidence and self-confidence. Here are some tips when choosing a frame:

  • Fashionable but useful. You’ll wear glasses for much of your waking hours, so you need to use frames that look good on you no matter what occasion it is.
  • Lens grade. Frames depend on the weight and grade of your lenses. Consult your optometrist before pairing lenses and frames together to ensure maximum comfort.
  • Half-frames and full-frames. For half-frames to hold a lens, a groove has to be made at the bottom of the lens and is secured to each end of the frame leading to the bridge with a nylon cord. While half-frames are considered fashionable, they are not as sturdy as full-frames.

Eyeglasses are more than just fashion accessories; they are very important tools for people with impaired vision. With these tips, you can buy the perfect lenses and frames to help you see clearer and better.
