How to Change a Belly Button Ring
Posted on August 17th, 2009 by aileenBody piercing is very common, especially among young adults. Most teenagers get body piercing as a way of self expression. Girls usually have their navels pierced. To change belly button rings, it’s important to remember two things: avoid trauma on the piercing site and beware of infections. Here are some things you can follow to change your belly button rings safely.
Things You’ll Need:
- A new belly button ring
- Alcohol or saline solution
- Soap and water
Steps:
- Check the piercing. You have to give time for the piercing to heal before you can change the belly button ring. It may take around 6 months for it to heal. Try moving your ring a little, if it hurts or you get uncomfortable, it means that the wound hasn’t healed yet.
- Clean the piercing site. Changing a belly button ring is best done after taking a shower, when you’ve cleaned the area. You can also opt to just clean the piercing site with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly. Be sure there are no traces of soap left. You may also apply alcohol on the site using a cotton ball. Do this in circular motion from the inside out. Remember to wash your hands before taking out your ring.
- Disinfect the new belly button ring. Soak it in a saline solution or alcohol for a few minutes. Wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
- Remove your old ring. Hold the top part firmly and slowly unscrew the bottom part of the ring. Lift out the top part.
- Insert the new ring. There shouldn’t be any pain or discomfort when removing or inserting a ring. If you find it uncomfortable to insert the new ring, go to a licensed body piercing shop and have one of the professionals help you insert your new ring.
- Secure the new ring and discard the old one.

Tips:
- Avoid introducing bacteria in the piercing site. You can do this by making sure you’ve cleaned your hands and the piercing site very well. You also need to make sure that the new ring is clean.
- You may also decide to apply an antibacterial ointment on your navel before inserting the new ring.
- Only have your piercings done and checked by a professional. Make sure that the equipment used are sterile. Things used for this procedure should be disposable. Needles should only be used once. If you have doubts about the sterility of the equipment, don’t push through with the procedure.
A navel piercing is nice to look at with an artsy piece of jewelry. Proper care is very important. Be sure to take care of your piercing very well to avoid infections. An inflamed body piercing doesn’t look good on anyone. (Tips on how to care for a new piercing)
