Ebay holds tons of appealing items up for bid. You can easily get lost with the number of choices available. Upon bidding, once you come across a better product, you may want to retract your bid and place it on your preferred item. The cancellation of bids is possible as long as it is done within the allowable period and it fits the site’s retraction criteria. Just follow the provisions provided by Ebay.

As a Buyer

Ebay allows buyers to retract their bids if they fall before the final dozen hours of the auction. Retracting a bid any later is unfair, since the item up for auction may end up without a buyer. If you wish to cancel your bid, simply hit the Cancel Bid button on the auctioned item’s page. You will be directed to a bid retraction form which you have to submit. The validity of your retraction will, then, be judged by Ebay.

Instances for Retraction

Ebay provides certain instances where you can formally cancel your bid:

if the item’s description was suddenly changed, negatively influencing your preference
if the seller’s contact information is not valid.
if the seller simply won’t respond to your inquiries
if the price you placed is incorrect

If the reason for your retraction does not fall within the instances provided by Ebay, your bid can still be canceled. Just contact the seller and convince him or her to retract your bid.

As the Seller

Sellers have the power to cancel bids for the auctioned products as long as their reasons fall within these instances:

if the highest bidder’s identity is questionable or not confirmed
if a bidder asks you to cancel his or her bid and you agreed
if the bid is for an item already sold
if the bid falls beyond the bidding period

When canceling a bid, you will be directed to a retraction page where you will fill up a bid retraction form. Ebay will, then, formalize the cancellation after.

Canceled Bids can Affect Your Reputation

Every cancelled bid is reflected on your bidding history (for buyers) or selling feedback(for sellers), which projects a negative image on the site’s other members. Having many cancelled bids can make you seem like an untrustworthy individual, which can affect your sales and your purchases. Use the option for retraction only if you have good reasons for doing so, otherwise just stick with the situation.
