How to Bodyboard
Posted on July 15th, 2009 by CarmeliaA bodyboard, also known as a boogie board, is a shorter version of the surfboard. Bodyboarding is relatively easy to learn, and can be enjoyable once you’ve gotten the hang of it. Here’s how to get started.
Materials
- Bodyboard
- Fins
- Wet suit
Procedure
- You don’t have to get the “proper size” for you when it comes to bodyboards. They all come in the same sizes, regardless of who uses them. If you don’t want to buy one, rent one in one of the shops along the beach.
- Put the bodyboard on the water and put yourself on top of it, lying down on your stomach. Swim or position yourself where the waves break. Keep your hands on top, in front of the board. When you see the waves coming in from afar, kick your legs towards the beach. The waves should propel you, not breaking on top of you.
- As the wave begins to carry and propel you, use your hands to help you navigate through the waters. Put your right hand on the side of the board if you want to go the left. Put your left hand on the rail if you want to go to the right. Going along with the direction where the wave’s face is going can make navigation easier.
- Pull yourself up, so that your torso is up and your back is arch. Your chest should be over the front of the board, head held up high.
- Use the hand on the side, also known as the outside hand, to pull up on the side of board to dig into the wave’s face. This will prevent you from sliding down and having the wave break on you.
- Release your dig into the wave’s face and dig in again to ride it up. Doing this repeatedly and going up and down will help keep control and build speed.
- Put your swimming fins down in the water if you want to slow down. Otherwise, keep them up to keep picking up speed.
