How to Block Telemarketer Calls
Posted on June 21st, 2009 by monsterguideMention the word “telemarketer” to a friend, and he or she may be irritated at the idea of someone calling up to sell products or services over the phone. You may even have had annoying experiences with people or machines calling your home phone number to pitch things like credit cards, vacation packages, or appliances. Here are some ways to block telemarketing calls.
Do Not Call Registry
Most telemarketing companies and outbound call centers are ethical and considerate when conducting business, although some companies may ring your phone at inconvenient times. Some people may consider the phone as an extension of their private lives, and don’t want to be interrupted by product or sales pitches. Other people can get very annoyed when someone calls them up at the middle of the night to endorse an advocacy or a political candidate.
One way to prevent telemarketing companies from dialing your number is by sending an application to the National Do Not Call Registry. The Do Not Call Registry is a list of numbers that, by law, telemarketers are not allowed to call. Once your number is listed on the registry, you can be rest assured that a telemarketer will not contact your home, unless the call is covered by an exception to the rule.
Contact Your Phone Provider
Many phone companies may offer services and upgrades (like caller ID) to prevent telemarketers from calling your phone line. You may also direct complaints to the customer service department, and they may take the actions necessary to free your communication lines from telemarketer calls.
Be Polite
If you do get a telemarketer call, it’s impolite and disrespectful to curse at the caller on the other end of the line, even if you feel that your privacy has been breached by the call. It’s best to let the telemarketer finish a few lines of his or her spiel, and hang up the phone. That way, you can send a clear message to the telemarketer that you don’t want your time interrupted by a pitch for a product or service.
Telemarketing is an effective strategy for some businesses, but most people do not want to go through precious minutes of their private lives listening to a sales pitch. With these tips, you no longer have to worry about telemarketers calling your home again.
