The Internet is a great resource for all sorts of information and entertainment, but it’s far from perfect.  Surfing the Net can sometimes be a pain, especially if you come across those annoying pop-up ads that disturb your browsing sessions.  Here are some ways to block pop-up ads and give you the best possible Internet browsing experience without interruptions.

What Are Pop-Ups?

Website owners earn through advertising.  Most ads are usually placed on the page, but some people may advertise products and services through external windows.  Some of these products and services may be legitimate, but the pop-ups can clutter your desktop, and disturb or even prevent you from browsing.

Pop-up ads are often portals for spyware, viruses, and other malicious software which install themselves on your computer without you even knowing it.  Pop-up ads are often a sign that your system is infected with spyware or malware.  Once you get pop-up ads, it’s very important to get rid of them to maintain the security and integrity of your computer or network.

Pop-Up Blockers

There are two ways to block pop-up ads:

  • Default. Many developers recognize that pop-up ads are a major concern for many Internet users.  Browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Google Chrome come with pop-up blockers that are activated by default.  Default pop-up blockers can intercept most pop-up advertisements, although there are some pop-up ads that make it through.
  • Third-party pop-up blockers. Most anti-virus software come with many tools to keep your computer secure when browsing the Net, like firewall tools and pop-up blockers.  It’s very important to activate these security tools when you’re browsing to minimize pop-up ads from showing up.

Safe Browsing

The best way to avoid pop-ups altogether is to visit sites that you trust.  If the security certificate of the website is invalid, or if you’ve visited the site before and you saw all sorts of pop-ups, it’s best not to visit that site again.  It also helps to run a full system scan regularly to see if your computer is affected by spyware or malware.

Pop-up ads are annoying, distracting, and very dangerous for your computer.  Getting rid of pop-up ads can assure you of a safe, fast Internet browsing experience with very minimal interruptions.
