How to Become a Yoga Instructor
Posted on October 21st, 2009 by CarmeliaYoga is steadily being taken up by more and more people everyday. Yoga is also considered as a form of alternative medicine. Keep yourself fit and healthy while helping others keep fit and healthy too. Here’s how to become a yoga instructor.
- Before you get started, keep in mind that there’s a high possibility that you won’t be earning buckets of money just yet. Many yoga instructors actually keep regular jobs while teaching some classes in between days.
- Practice yoga yourself before even think about teaching. Be as good at it as you can, both to be a good teacher and to ascertain if you really enjoy doing it.
- Decide on what type of yoga you want to teach. You can focus on Bikram yoga, vinyasa yoga or hatha yoga. A wider range, will, of course make you a more flexible. Other yoga specializations are Baptiste Power Yoga, Anusura and Iyengar. (For more information on Yoga, read The Guide to Yoga)
- Ask your yoga teacher if there are any yoga teacher training programs. Make sure that the training program is certified by the Yoga Alliance, a nationwide organization that provides the standards of certification. If there aren’t any training programs, you can always enroll in an ashram or a yoga institute.
- Be prepared to pay around $3,000 in completing your course of training. Training may range from three months with daily training sections to a year, with training sessions taking place a few days a week. There are two levels that you need to complete: A 200 hour training for yoga instructor trainess and 500 hours for those who want to advance their level.
- Other than yoga, expect to learn ashana, anatomy, the philosophy behind yoga and teaching techniques that you should master.
- Once you’ve completed the required training course, fulfill the requirements for certification, which vary from state to state.
- Once you’ve passed the required certification process, you can have the acronym RYT after your name, which means Registered Yoga Teacher.
