How to Beat Mantis

If you play Metal Gear Solid 4, you may find the boss level at Act 5 to be quite difficult and confusing. Mantis is one of those tricky boss characters found in almost every video game, and MGS 4 is no exception. If you find defeating Mantis to be frustrating and exasperating, here are some tips and tricks to help you out.

What You Need

You need to be equipped with the following items to beat Mantis:

  • Syringe
  • M4, equipped with scope, grip, and lots of ammunition.
  • Mosin Nagant
  • M870 and stun grenades (to help keep your kill count low especially if you plan to beat Mantis during a Big Boss Emblem run)

Walkthrough

  1. Use the Syringe on yourself (press L2 to equip the Syringe and then press X).

  2. Run to the stairs along the right side.
  3. Take out some of the FROG soldiers if needed. Ignore the troopers if you’re aiming to make this a Big Boss Emblem run.
  4. Attack one of the dolls using the M4. Focus on the doll dangling on her left: this is the Psycho Mantis doll. The scope will come really handy during this part of the boss battle.
  5. Mantis will eventually scream “SNAKE,” fly at you, and then she’ll miss. There’s a small window of opportunity that you can fire at the doll. Watch out for those sharp blades that Mantis may throw at you.
  6. Mantis will then proceed to use Meryl as a weapon. There are two ways to take Meryl down: one option is to knock her out with the M870. The other option (which is far more tricky) is to approach Meryl and use the Syringe on her. Take cover to avoid getting your life drained by FROG soldier attacks. Non-lethal killing methods include using the M870 (do not use the Mosin Nagant yet) or shooting the enemies at the foot or leg. Keep firing at Mantis’ dolls to speed up the boss battle.
  7. A second cut scene will show that Meryl will attempt to commit suicide. At this point, you can then use the Mosin Nagant on Meryl, or you can try using the Syringe. Keep firing at the dolls.
  8. Once Mantis drops the doll, drop your scope and make a run towards the item. You can now control Mantis.
  9. To take down Mantis, hold the L1 button and tilt the controller around to control Mantis with the Psycho Mantis doll. Perform this until Mantis is defeated.

It may take a few tries before you get the hang of defeating Mantis, but with these tips and tricks, you can beat the challenging boss battle that is Mantis.
