How to Apply Bronzer
Posted on May 28th, 2009 by ElaineDying to have a sun-kissed complexion, but you don’t want to go the beach or to a tanning salon? There’s one easy solution for that, which is to apply a bronzer. Putting on bronzer isn’t as easy as it sounds though, and you might end up laughable instead of beautiful. To help you out, here’s how to apply bronzer.
What You’ll Need:
- Bronzer
- Base powder
- Brush
- Cotton pad
- Tissue
Procedure:
- Choose the right shade of bronzer. This is the one many women often get wrong. A bronzer works to subtly darken the complexion, so the shade you choose depends on the dramatic change you want to get, as well as your skin tone. The bronzer you pick must only be a few shades darker than your real skin color. When you go to the beauty store, test a few shades on your face and see which one “warms” your skin well, but doesn’t look fake.
- Fair-skinned women should go for a honey-colored bronzer, while those with medium complexion can get a gold-flecked or rose-bronze bronzer. If you have dark skin, choose an amber or tawny bronzers. Hair color can also affect your choice of bronzer shade. If you’re a brunette, opt for a more orange bronzer, but if you’re a blond, wear a pink bronzer.
- Get a fluffy and wide powder brush, made from natural fibres. Brushes that are too stiff and small only give you a blotchy look.
- Moisture or oil on your face can make the bronzer streak, so apply a small amount of powder first. Don’t use foundation though, because it makes the bronzer appear “muddy”. If you have dry skin, put on some sheer moisturizer first, before you put on the base powder.
- Open the bronzer container and swirl your brush evenly in it. Tap off excessive bronzer, to make sure you get an even application. Rubbing the brush on a clean tissue is also all right. With bronzer, a little goes a long way.
- Apply the bronzer to your face. You want to cover those areas that the sun naturally hits. Start with the top of the forehead first, working down to your nose, then to the cheeks. Use very light strokes. Gradually build up the color, so you get the shade you want. Put a small amount on your chin, too.
- Once you’re done, check your application, by going in the daylight. Make sure it isn’t very heavy, and that there are no streaks. If you think the bronzer is too much, blend it down evenly with a cotton pad, or add some more base powder. If it still doesn’t look right, take the bronzer off, and start again.

Some Tips
- If you have skin that’s too dry, consider switching to a liquid, stick or cream bronzer instead.
- Only apply bronzer to facial parts that become dark or sunburnt.
- To maintain good hygiene, wash your brushes regularly, keeping them in good condition. Use conditioner, washing-up liquid and warm water.
- A bronzer that looks too orange is a no-no. It will look very fake.
- If your skin is dry, apply a sheer moisturizer evenly before applying the base powder, or consider using a cream, stick or liquid bronzer instead.
Who says you have to wait for summer to get tanned? With a perfectly applied bronzer, your face will always look sun-kissed and beautiful all year round, whenever you want it to be!
