A divining rod is a tool used by a diviner to  locate things of importance usually hidden under the surface of the earth. Usually the divining rod is used to look for water sources, although metal, gemstones and even “Earth currents”. Earlier on still in history, divining has also been a way for people to discern the will of the gods. Other words used for divining is dowsing, doodlebugging and water-witching.

The Divining Rod

To start, you first need a divining rod. A dividing rod should be a wooden Y-shaped branched, whose shape was formed organically and not put together by human hands. The preferred wood, which would bring more accurate results are:

  • Hazel twigs
  • Witch-hazel branches
  • Willow
  • Peaches

It is also believed that the fresher the branch is, the more effective it is for dowsing or divining.

Nowadays, metallic divining rods are used in the same way. It can be a wire formed into an L-shape or a wire coat hanger. The short part of the L is grasped tightly facing the sky, while the longer part is facing forward. A diving crystal can also be hung from the end of the divining rod, which will help aid in turning towards the right direction. This device is called a pendulum.

How to Use a Divining Rod

Method 1

  1. Get a wooden or metallic divining rod. The forked part of the divining rod must be held closely against your chest or torso.
  2. Hold the divining rod firmly but loosely, allowing it to move in your hand.
  3. Walk around the area with the divining rod pointing forward. Feel your surroundings, and focus your energies on the divining rod.
  4. Look closely at the far tip of the divining rod. If the tip goes steadily downwards, stop. Check the area. The divining rod pointing down is the sign and the direction where you will find what you are looking for.

Method 2

  1. Determine which directions point to Yes or No. For example, an up-down movement can mean Yes, while a left-right movement can mean no.
  2. You can also lay out a paper with the Yes or No option written in two different directions. The pendulum will point towards the correct action.
  3. Get ready with your divining rod with a pendulum. Be very still and focus your energies on the divining rod. Ask your question and wait for the pendulum to gravitate towards the correct answer.
